Meulebeke

Schools

As already said, Meulebeke has several schools. The smaller parishes only have small primary schools (one each), but the centre has several bigger schools. Apart from the sports school, there are two other schools:

The Catholic school "Sint Lutgardis Instituut" consists of two buildings. This is the building I always went to in primary school. This building also houses two years of high school (a department of the school "De Bron", of which the main building is in nearby town Tielt).
The school is connected to a convent. These days the population of nuns there is not that big anymore.
The state school "Het Beukenhof" is another primary school in the centre of Meulebeke.
Note: in Belgium you have several types of schools. On one hand, you have the so-called state schools, because they are fully sponsored by the government. On the other hand, you have the so-called free schools, of which a large percentage is Catholic (but there are also provincial, city, Jewish, Protestant ... schools). These schools do receive money from the government, but not as much as the state schools. Although education is officially free in Belgium (no tuition fees can be asked, unless in the few private schools that exist), the free schools are slightly more expensive in costs of books, heating ... for the students than the state schools.
